This course focuses on both traditional business data and contemporary big data modelling and management. We will examine the different natures of traditional data and big data, selection and representation as well as use of suitable methods and tools for storing and accessing them. Topics such as DBMS, Relational Data Modeling, SQL, Big Data, NoSQL, and Data Visualization are covered.
Specifically, we will achieve the following goals: (1) Discuss database design and data management in the context of relational systems and big data (2) Develop competence in data modeling with Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD) (3) Gain hands-on experiences with database systems management using MySQL (4) Introduce NoSQL and big data management through hands-on exercises using MongoDB (5) Understand the difference between relational database and NoSQL, and their real-world applications
